VINCENNES, Ind. (Aug. 25, 2014) - After their first tournament of the year at Vincennes University in Indiana, the Rend Lake College Volleyball team came home with a record of 1-3, defeating Edison Community College of Piqua, Ohio 3-0 and falling to Lake Land College 0-3, Mineral Area College 0-3, and Kalamazoo Valley Community College 1-4.
On Friday, Aug. 22, the team first took on Lake Land College of Mattoon with sophomore Rowdee Sanders (Carterville) and freshman Ashley Modglin (Shiloh Hill) leading the team at the net. Sanders added three kills, four blocks, and one ace to her name and Modglin registered six kills, one block, and five digs. Other leaders included Rebekah Maddox (DuQuoin) with five kills and two blocks, and Allie Lietz (Hoyleton) with four kills and one block. Rounding off the top performers were Emily Green (Wayne City) with eight assists, Koral McBride (Murphysboro) with 10 assists and four digs, and Cassidy Melliere (Prairie du Rocher) with five digs. The Lady Warriors lost all three games 18-25, 23-25, and 17-25.
Next, the team focused their sights on Mineral Area College of Park Hills, Mo., losing 0-3 with 23-25, 14-25, and 9-25. McBride and Green both added assists to their stats with 12 and eight respectively. Freshman sisters Danielle and Denise Bruns (Pinckneyville) hit the floor for the first time as Lady Warriors, bringing in four kills and two blocks for Danielle and three kills for Denise. Sanders added six kills, Maddox racked up three kills and two blocks, and Melliere brought 11 digs to the game.
Day two of the tournament, Aug. 23, brought the Lady Warriors face-to-face with Edison Community College where they brought in their first win of the season at 25-12, 25-13, and 25-21. Top performers during the match were McBride with 11 assists, two aces, and six digs; Denise Bruns with five kills, two blocks, and six digs; and Sanders with four kills, one block, and two aces. Other Lady Warriors in the match included Danielle Bruns with four kills and seven blocks, Maddox with five kills and four blocks, Green with nine assists, and Melliere with 14 digs.
To wrap up the Vincennes Tournament, RLC took on Kalamazoo Valley Community College of Kalamazoo, Mich. After winning the first game 26-24, the Lady Warriors fell in three: 21-25, 11-25, and 24-26. Melliere took the top slot as far as performance with three kills, four aces, and 17 digs. Ewing-native Kacee Roberts logged nine digs for her first appearance this season. Other top players included Sanders with seven kills and two blocks, Modglin with four kills and one block, McBride with eight assists, and Green with 10 assists.
"We had some good moments at the tournament this weekend in Vincennes, and overall I was pleased," said Head Coach Sara Crews. "We put up better block numbers this weekend than I think I have ever had, so that will definitely make a huge difference this year."
The Lady Warriors will continue their season Wednesday, Aug. 27, against Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville before traveling to Springfield for the Lincoln Land Tournament Friday, Aug. 29, and Saturday, Aug. 30. For all things athletic at The Lake, visit RLC online at www.rlc.edu/warriors.
