DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - From the first round of the 2012 NJCAA Women's Golf Championship Tournament, Rend Lake College lived up to its top-10 national ranking. The Lady Warriors started in ninth and finished in ninth, despite trimming its score over the next three rounds.
RLC, coached by Cindy Corn, finished with a total score of 1,396 (350-351-348-347) on the LPGA course Thursday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The top finisher for Rend Lake was Gabbi Schuerman. The sophomore NJCAA Region XXIV medalist from Decatur, Ill., finished in a tie for 31st place out of 115 golfers. Schuerman carded a 325 overall (83-80-80-82). All-Region 24 Lady Warrior Hannah Gill (Carterville, Ill.) shot 332 (82-85-85-80) to tie for 35th. Taylor Koeller, a freshman from St. Libory, Ill., followed up a 53 on the front nine Thursday with a strong 39 in her final nine holes of the tournament. It moved Koeller up to 61st place with an overall score of 369 (93-94-90-92).
All-Region 24 freshman Lexie Shoemaker of Mount Vernon, Ill., finished in a tie for 63rd with scores of 92-92-96-93 (373) and sophomore Keeghan May (Nashville, Ill.) tied for 71st place with a total score of 384 (96-100-93-95).
Redlands Community College won the national championship with a score of 1,176 and had the tournament medalist, Sarah Schober of Austria, who finished at 282 (73-71-68-70) - eight strokes ahead of teammate Elcin Ulu of Instanbul, Turkey. Complete results are online HERE.
This year was Rend Lake's 12th time competing as a team at the national championships. Since 2000, RLC earned a spot at nationals every year except 2003. The Lady Warriors' best finish was fourth in 2005. It took fifth in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009 through 2011; sixth in 2000; seventh in 2001 and 2008; ninth this year; and 10th in 2002.
