INA, Ill. (Aug. 28, 2013) – As the first Rend Lake College women’s golf tournament of the season nears, Head Coach Cindy Corn and her young team of five freshman and lone returning sophomore are ready to take to the course for the first time.
“Right now, we’re learning the golf course and focusing on qualifying,” said Corn. “We’re going to Illinois College this weekend. We have a really good fall schedule and I’m very excited about the team.”
This fall, the team has one returning player, Kylee Henager of Mt. Carmel. Corn said she expects Henager to take a lead role on the team, but the five incoming freshmen, Madison Burgett (Charleston), Kaylyn Fuhrhop (Okawville), Katie Garver (Campbell Hill), Ashley Sexton (Anderson, Ind.) and Emily Thomas (Moline), will also be vying for a spot.
“Kylee is a much-improved returning player, and she’s been performing really well this fall already,” said Corn. “From what I can tell with our practices, all five freshmen can take a lead role too. We have a young team this year, but they all have really good attitudes and they’ve got a very good work ethic.”
Corn is also working on recruiting for the spring and next fall semesters; though she said the girls are strong. The Lady Warriors finished third with two all-tournament finishers at last fall’s Illinois College Tournament. RLC followed that up with a championship at the same invitational in the spring.
“With golf being a fall and spring sport, there may be more joining in the spring, but there aren’t any more right now,” said Corn. “If the girls are hard workers, there’s no need to bring anyone else.”
Golfers at RLC shoot for low scores on the course and high scores in class, said Corn. Last year, the women’s golf team was recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for its 3.11 GPA.
The Lady Warriors will play in the Illinois College Tournament this Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1 at The Links Golf Course in Jacksonville, Ill. To see the women’s golf schedule and roster, click here.
