INA, Ill. (Nov. 22, 2013) – The Annual Jingle Bell Run and Walk for Arthritis is catching up with the holiday spirits with the Snowman Stroll, Reindeer Run and 5K, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 at Rend Lake College. The eighth annual event is sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation.
Participants can help the Foundation raise money and stay active in the winter months by partaking of four events, a 5K run or walk, a one-mile Snowman Stroll or a Reindeer Run for children. The Snowman Stroll will begin at 8:45 a.m., with the 5K run and walk kicking off at 9 a.m. The children’s Reindeer Run will begin around 10:10 a.m.
Laura Johnson, event organizer and RLC Aquatics Center Coordinator, said the event has helped raise over $90,000 since it was first hosted at Rend Lake College in 2006. Last year, participants contributed $13,518 to the Arthritis Foundation.
“This event raises awareness of America’s leading cause of disability, while raising funds for research, health education and government advocacy to improve the lives of people with arthritis,” said Johnson.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are 50 million Americans suffering with arthritis. Two-thirds of those people are under the age of 65, including 300,000 children. It is estimated that by 2030, the number of people with arthritis will increase to 67 million Americans.
“We are encouraging everyone to consider putting together a team of five or more runners and walkers to help raise money to support the Arthritis Foundation,” Johnson added.
Participants who pre-register are guaranteed a t-shirt with their $25 fee. Registration may be done online at www.arthritis.org, or forms may be completed in the RLC Aquatics Center, Fitness Center in Ina, or the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon. Registration the day of the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. at $30 per person in the Sports Complex.
All 5K walkers and Reindeer runners will receive participation medals. First through third place runners in the 5K will also receive medals by age group.
