INA, Ill. (July 31, 2013) – For students looking to fill an elective with a class of a different tune, look no further than RLC’s Concert Choir.
The one-credit hour class still has seats open for the fall semester, said Associate Professor of Music Sara Alstat. The ensemble meets from noon until 12:50 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Rend Lake College Ina campus. Tuition is waived for the class and sheet music will be provided by the college. Students pay only a $3 fee to join.
“Anyone can register for Concert Choir, all majors are welcome,” said Alstat. “Auditions are held during the first week of class to determine voice level, but students need to register before the semester begins. Instead of taking another three-hour lecture course as an elective, take something that showcases your talent.”
This Concert Choir performs a wide array of musical styles, including secular, sacred, Broadway, jazz, popular and much more. This fall, the Choir will perform a Halloween Concert in October in addition to performing at the annual Foundation Dinner. Other performances will be scheduled during the fall and spring semesters, including a year-end trip to Disney World.
In addition to directing the Concert Choir, Alstat teaches another unique music course, Voice Class I.
“Students learn in a group setting how to sing properly, and will also learn correct voice placement, breath control, and tone production in a comfortable and fun environment,” said Alstat. “This course is offered only in the fall semester is held from 3 until 3:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Ina campus. Voice Class I can also be used as an elective toward any degree. Students are encouraged to take Voice Class in addition to joining the Concert Choir.”
