In a first for Southern Illinois, the top seniors in high school volleyball will take sides and square off against each other in the inaugural All-South All-Star Volleyball Game, to be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Waugh Gymnasium at Rend Lake College.
RLC Volleyball Coach Rhonda Carlton said the game is being played to promote volleyball in Southern Illinois.
"This is the first all-star tournament for volleyball in this area," Carlton said. "Rend Lake College is proud to be a part of that."
Carlton has been traveling to in-district junior high schools to donate game tickets to junior high volleyball players.
At a mandatory practice held prior to the tournament, Benton Consolidated High School Volleyball Coach Tony Phelps and DuQuoin High School Volleyball Coach Paul Miller will evaluate the players and choose teams.
In order to play in the All-South All-Star Game, players must be high school seniors who made the Southern Illinois All-South Team or who plan on attending Rend Lake College next year, according to Carlton.
"We hope this tournament will be successful because in the future we would like to have a junior high all-star tournament," Carlton said.
Tickets are $2 for students and $5 for adults. For tickets or for more information, contact Carlton at (618) 437-5321, Ext. 1306, or call toll-free (in-district only) at 1-800-369-5321, Ext. 1306.
