Rend Lake College and the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to present a $1,000 scholarship to a high school student intending to transfer to RLC.
According to Brenda Malone, Executive Director of the Chamber, the Chamber already has two Student of the Year scholarships which can be used to transfer to the college of the student’s choice. This new award will be used exclusively at Rend Lake College, said Malone.
Malone said the Rend Lake College award will be based on the same criteria as the other Student of the Year awards, in that it will be a merit-based award centering on grade-point average, citizenship, extracurricular activities and other factors.
Malone credited Pat Mitchell, Chief Financial Officer of the Rend Lake College Foundation, for coming forward with the proposal for the new award. The idea was born from regular meetings of the RLC President’s Cabinet.
“The Jefferson County Chamber’s Student of the Year award is a great way to reward our young people,” Mitchell said. “We are proud to be a part of this wonderful program.”
“We are looking for the outstanding citizens of our future,” said Malone. She added that past winners usually have participated in a dozen or more extracurricular activities, are articulate and have near-perfect grade-point averages.
To be eligible for these awards, students must be residents of Jefferson County, must attend a high school which is a member of the Chamber and must go through the application process. Winners are selected by the Chamber’s Educational Clearing House Council and are announced at the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.
“It is a tough choice to make. We have a lot of great students,” said Malone.
She added that the purpose of these awards is to create stronger connections between education and business.
“We are very excited about having this extra scholarship,” Malone said of the new Rend Lake College award. “It adds a lot of dimension to our program.” She described RLC as a strong partner with the Chamber and the community.
Applications for this year’s awards are due by Tuesday, Jan. 25. For more information, contact the Rend Lake College Foundation at (618) 437-5321, Ext. 1324, or the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce at (618) 242-5725.
