High school students and community college transfer students will have the opportunity to visit with representatives of an estimated 40 Midwest colleges and universities when Rend Lake College hosts the fourth annual Illinois College Exposition (ICE) on the Ina campus Tuesday, September 27, from 6-8 p.m.
The college fair is a project of the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC) and Rend Lake College in cooperation with area high schools. It will be held in James “Hummer” Waugh Gymnasium.
The chance for students and their parents to explore a wide variety of higher education options and for the four-year college reps who take advantage of the invitation to disseminate information and answer questions is open to the public at no charge.
Participants will have a unique opportunity the evening of September 27 to explore a variety of higher education options both in-state and out. Parents are encouraged to participate.
RLC counselors have sent postcards encouraging every junior and senior in the college district and all Rend Lake College students enrolled in transfer-degree programs to attend. Information also has been made available to area high school guidance counselors.
“Those attending the Illinois College Exposition will receive important information about education planning and will be able to visit displays from a wide variety of colleges and universities and speak one-on-one with representatives from these educational institutions,” said Rend Lake College Counselor Annette Braden, who is coordinating activities.
A Financial Aid seminar conducted by longtime RLC Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Doug Carlson is scheduled from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
According to Braden, the Illinois College Exposition should prove beneficial for anyone who may be considering college. She calls it “the perfect opportunity to get answers to many of your questions and learn more about programs, campus activities and admission requirements.”
The area-wide event is taking the place of most local “College Nights” previously held. Last year’s event attracted approximately 450 students and guests.
“This should be the biggest and best yet,” Braden added.
Represented, in addition to Rend Lake College, will be most of the institutions that get a majority of Southern Illinois students – Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, SIU at Edwardsville, University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, Eastern Illinois University, Murray (KY) State University, Southeast Missouri State University, McKendree College and University of Evansville (IN).
Confirmations from other Illinois schools include Blackburn College in Carlinville, Bradley University in Peoria, Eureka College, Greenville College, Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois State University in Normal, Lincoln College, MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Millikin University in Decatur, Quincy University, Rockford College, U. of I.-Springfield and Western Illinois University in Macomb. The Illinois Army National Guard also will be represented, and more institutions are expected.
