Beading, candlemaking and baking are a few of the new offerings available in the Pinckneyville area through Rend Lake College’s Community Education Department.
“Beading: Bracelet / Earrings Set,” is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, in Room 101 of the RLC Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus. Designed for the beginning craftsperson, this class will teach students to create both a bracelet and earrings. Students will be able to select the design style and bead color which appeal to them. The class costs $10 plus supplies.
Separate fact from fiction with “Commonsense Nutrition,” set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, in Room 102 of the Murphy-Wall campus. In this class, students will learn to read a nutrition label and discover why people eat more than they think they do. Participants will leave the class knowing the portion for a correct serving size and will understand that good nutrition is really just common sense. The class costs $10.
Using an early technique which originated in Germany, create a floor rug which will last and last with “Toothbrush Rag Rug,” to be held in two Tuesday sessions, Feb. 21 and Feb. 28. Each session will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mulberry’s, 314 Water St. Participants will use a toothbrush and strips of material to create their own designs which will find a treasured spot in their homes. The course costs $22.
Chase away the winter doldrums with “Spring Sampler,” a series of three 50-minute workshops set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Murphy-Wall campus. The featured workshops are “Baking: Taste of Brunch,” “Scrapbooking: Make and Take,” and “Candle Making: Tea Light.” Participants may attend any or all of these sessions, and the cost for each is $3 plus supplies. Classes have limited enrollment, so register early.
Get an introduction to wax, wicks and scents with “Candle Making for Beginners: Tart and Gel Candle.” This class will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 25, in Room 113 of the Murphy-Wall campus. Students will learn to make gel candles safely and will make tart and gel candles to take home. Students also will take home a votive mold, wick, wax and scent to try at home. Class cost is $25.
Learn the ins and outs of the world’s on-line auction marketplace with “Ebay and You,” set for three Tuesday sessions, from April 11 through April 25. Each session will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 102 of the Murphy-Wall campus. This class will cover the basic skills of buying, selling and navigating on Ebay. Students will discover Ebay’s rules and regulations, basic marketing techniques for selling items and the basic skills required to hunt for bargains. Save money or turn a profit with a few clicks of a mouse. Course cost is $18.
Share family memories and recipes with “Scrapbooking: Paper Bag Recipe Book,” scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in Room 102 of the Murphy-Wall campus. Step-by-step instructions make completing this project a snap. Class cost is $27.
“Spanish for Travelers,” a class designed to allow students to feel comfortable when traveling to a Spanish-speaking country, will be held in three Thursday sessions, from April 27 through May 11. Sessions will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 24 at Pinckneyville Community High School. The class will focus on communicating in places such as the airport and the hotel, asking for directions, making friendly conversation and understanding another culture. Course cost is $18.
Join Brian Kalata, RLC’s Culinary Arts Instructor, for “Baking: For the Love of Chocolate,” set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the PCHS kitchen. This cooking class, specializing in chocolate, will be a unique combination of hands-on learning, camaraderie with fellow cooks and a wonderful tasting experience at the end of the session. Students will learn to prepare and present two types of desserts during this session, recipes included. Preregistration is required; class cost is $30.

• “ACT Prep,” five Saturday sessions, March 18 through April 22 (except April 1), 9 a.m.-noon, RLC Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus 102, $61.
• “First Aid / CPR,” 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, RLC Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus 101, free.
Rend Lake College also is offering a full lineup of credit courses and GED courses in Pinckneyville this spring.
