This summer, four Rend Lake College Licensed Practical Nursing students will reap the rewards of a scholarship endowment established by students before them.
Receiving summer LPN Endowment Scholarships this year are Brandi Austin (Mt. Vernon), Ashley Barrett (Sesser), Jenny Nix (Salem) and Tracy Parker (Sparta).
The LPN Endowment was set up by LPN students more than 20 years ago, and students over the years have organized fund-raising efforts to help fill out the endowment. The scholarship covers tuition for summer courses.
“Traditional forms of financial aid do not always pay for summer tuition, so this assistance is very beneficial,” said Dr. Sharon Beasley, Allied Health Division Chair.
Any Practical Nursing student enrolled in a summer term is eligible to apply for the award. The RLC Foundation oversees the finances of the scholarship. It first became involved with the LPN Endowment in 1987, although funds were being raised to establish the scholarship before then.
The 45-hour Practical Nursing program is designed to prepare students for the practice of practical nursing as defined in the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The successful graduate will possess fundamental nursing knowledge and skills necessary to function as a member of the health care team as a Practical Nurse.
The three-semester program is approved by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. Each student will complete courses which will include classroom lecture, laboratory practice and/or clinical experiences.
Upon graduation from the program, the student will be eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses).
