From her time on the Lady Warriors softball diamond through her growing responsibilities as an employee of Rend Lake College, Kelly Downes has made a lasting impression on her colleagues. She was chosen as a recipient of the 2006 Outstanding Staff Award during the annual Faculty / Staff Dinner held Friday, May 5, at the Rend Lake Resort Conference Center.
The co-recipient of the award was Resource Development Specialist Trudee Wynn.
Downes (Woodlawn) began her career at RLC as a student and a softball player – a walk-on who was awarded a softball scholarship her sophomore year. She earned her Associate in Applied Science Degree from RLC in 2000 and has worked at the college for five years.
Downes has worn many hats during her time at the college, working in the Textbook Rental Center, Student Transfer and Retention Support, Title III programs, Upward Bound, and most recently for both Information Technology and Student Services. Downes currently is the Assistant to the Vice President of Information Technology / Student Services and the Dean of Student Services.
“Her job requires an extreme amount of patience and understanding as she listens to and assists students, faculty and staff,” her colleagues wrote in a nomination letter. “Kelly is a very conscientious employee who is always professional in her appearance and demeanor and is respected by all who know her.”
“I’m very humbled and honored that the people I work with nominated me for this award. I certainly didn’t expect it. I truly enjoy my job and working with such a great group of people,” said Downes.
“On top of her attributes as an employee, Kelly is more importantly a great person,” her colleagues praised. “She is not only a co-worker, but also a friend. Kelly is truly deserving of the Rend Lake College Outstanding Staff Award.”
