Senior adults have the chance to make new friends, enjoy some camaraderie and compete with their peers in the Rend Lake College Regional Senior Games on Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3. The deadline for registration is Friday, May 26.
According to Pat Hollada, who is no stranger to Senior Games competition in both Illinois and Florida, these events are a way for seniors to keep a healthy lifestyle and have fun doing it. She said participants can make new lifelong friends at the games.
The games are divided into age brackets and by men’s and women’s competitions, “so there’s a good chance to compete and win a medal,” Hollada said.
“Don’t tell yourself, ‘Hey, I’m getting too old. I can’t do this,’” Hollada said. “That doesn’t work. Everybody needs exercise. Mental and physical ability ... you don’t have it if you don’t use it.”
Another highlight is for children to get their pictures taken with grandma and grandpa after they win a medal, Hollada said.
“It’s a big deal and it’s a lot of fun,” she added.
In order to participate, competitors must be 50 years of age or older as of May 26, 2006. Age categories will be 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89 and 90 and over. Medals will be given to the first- and second-place finishers in each event, and third-place finishers will receive ribbons.
Anyone interested in joining the Senior Games can sign up for any or all events for a total of $20. Some competitions (bowling, golf and swimming) have facility usage fees.
