The Therapeutic Massage program prepares people for careers in massage and bodywork. Practitioners use their hands to apply various scientific principles to the muscles and soft tissue. Day (full-time) and evening (part-time) programs are available at Rend Lake College.
Therapeutic massage is used to facilitate relaxation, health improvement and pain relief. The program provides education in the human body, clinical experience and business, professional and personal development. Swedish Massage techniques are utilized as the foundation of practice.
Graduates may work in a variety of settings, including medical facilities, beauty salons, private practices and sports clinics.
An Illinois State Police background check is required to enroll in the program. Upon successful completion, students are qualified to take the national certification examination.
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is employed in clinical laboratories of hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices and other health care facilities. The MLT performs testing on blood and body fluids under the supervision of a medical technologist and/or pathologist in the areas of hematology, chemistry, blood bank, urinalysis, serology, coagulation and microbiology. The MLT performs maintenance on equipment and instruments, applies basic scientific principles to laboratory techniques and procedures, recognizes factors that affect procedures and relates laboratory findings to common disease processes. In addition, the MLT interacts with physicians and other health care personnel.
The Medical Laboratory Technology program is offered through the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market and is a cooperative program with Shawnee Community College, Southeastern Illinois College and John A. Logan College.
