In conjunction with the American Heart Association, Rend Lake College is offering several courses which can help save lives.
Leslie Hodge, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Instructor for RLC, said these classes have been in great demand. She said about 1,500 hours of CPR were taught over the past year. The college has added eight new instructors in an effort to further expand the program.
Among the classes being offered are Heartsaver CPR, Health Care Provider CPR, First Aid (a class which meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements), Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). ACLS, BLS, Heartsaver and PALS Instructor classes also are available.
Instruction in these areas is free to not-for-profit organizations. There is a charge for businesses. However, there is a program that allows the college to assist these businesses in having their own instructors so they will not incur charges again. RLC allows these people to use college equipment, provides CPR cards at no cost and assists the students in obtaining half of a college credit.
"We want to provide services to the community to allow people to be able to help their loved ones," Hodge said.
The Heartsaver course is aimed at people not in the health care industry who need a CPR course. Health Care Provider CPR is geared toward those in the industry.
First Aid and BLS are courses for those who want or need to maintain CPR certification. It includes 7 1/2 hours of classroom lecture, practical application and outside study of materials.
Those participating in the ACLS course will attain the skills and knowledge necessary for certification in American Heart Association Advanced Life Support. It is open to people who come from settings in which cardiac arrests occur.
The PALS provider course is designed to identify and treat cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children. Upon successful completion, the participant will become certified in AHA PALS.
Hodge said college officials also are preparing an ACLS Internet course.
Courses offered in April and May are:
**Heartsaver -- April 5, May 6
**Health Care Provider -- April 6, May 7
**ACLS Recertification -- April 8, May 13
