WAYNE CITY – Rend Lake College has some exciting Community Education classes coming up in Wayne City.
Beginning in early March is “Kids In the Kitchen” where children go through a how-to course in basic food preparation and nutrition concepts. Students must be in at least the first grade to participate. The four-session Kids In the Kitchen costs $32 plus a supply fee of $10. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. each Thursday, March 6 - 27, in the Home Economics room at Wayne City High School.
“Dog Obedience” will show pet owners how to train their dogs to be obedient, which makes for a happier dog and owner. Instruction on basic behavioral obedience training will be taught such as sit, heel, stay, down, long stay and recall. Participating dogs must be at least 6 months old and parents must accompany any student below the age of 12. Homework, essential for effective training, is expected to be accomplished between classes. A supply list will be provided at registration. This class will take place from 6-8 p.m. each Tuesday, April 1-22, at Wayne City Park.
Visit the Quilting Capital of the U.S. with a trip to the “Paducah Quilt Show” – one of the largest quilt shows on the planet! Participants will see hundreds of quilts, visit the Quilt Museum, shop downtown Paducah and Hancock Fabrics, and see a live Eleanor Burns Show. The bus will leave from Wayne City High School at 7 a.m. Saturday, April 26 and pick up passengers at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon. Lunch, dinner and admission fees are not included in the price of $36. Bring one fat quarter to trade during the trip. Enrollment is limited, so register early. Expect to return home around 8:30 p.m.
Maintaining a lake or pond is a year-round job. In “Pond Maintenance” participants bring in a sample of their vegetation and fish to find out if they are healthy. A District fishery biologist from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will discuss vegetation control, stocking a pond, disease in fish, and herbicides. The class will meet from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Timmons Pond in Wayne City and will be led Steve Jenkins. It costs only $9.
