From a tour of Russia to learning about word processing, it’s never to late to learn with four upcoming classes through the Rend Lake College Foundation Institute for Learning in Retirement.
Registration is ongoing for these classes, the first of which is an "Armchair Tour of Russia." Participants will be led on the tour by four women from the Mt. Vernon area - Marjorie Farrar, Vera Smith, Chris Blank and Margaret Martin - who took a river cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow, stopping at four country towns along the way.
Russia can be a fascinating place, as these four travelers discovered, from the imperial beauty of Moscow and St. Petersburg to the bleakly romantic Siberian countryside. Russia still remains mysterious to many foreigners but is full of cultural and historic treasures, including the Tzar palaces and cathedrals.
The class will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, November 6, in RLC Science Building Room 110. The $15 fee includes lunch after the class.
"Introduction to Microsoft Word" will be held from 1-4 p.m. on three consecutive Thursdays - November 6, 13 and 20 - in RLC Academic Building Room 203. This introduction to word processing will address topics such as creating and editing documents, addressing envelopes and creating signs using pictures and different colors.
Questions are encouraged during the sessions, which will be led by John Metcalf. The fee of $25 includes the textbook.
Take a trip to Shryock Auditorium on the campus of Southern Illinois University to see the
Trinity Irish Dancers on Saturday, November 15. This unique, Irish-American company from Chicago changed the direction and scope of Irish dance, reintroducing the art from as a phenomenon of today.
Founded in 1990, it was the birthplace of progressive Irish dance, opening up the artistic pathways that led to productions such as "Riverdance" and "Lord of the Dance."
Participants will leave at 4 p.m. from the Rend Lake College MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon and there will be a pickup at Big John’s in Benton at 4:30 p.m. The group is scheduled to arrive at Giant City Lodge at 5:30 p.m. Showtime is 7:30 p.m., and the group will return to Benton at approximately 11 p.m. and to Mt.
