Everyone is invited to relax with a steaming cup of free gourmet coffee at Saturday’s grand opening of the RLC Coffee Shop at the Rend Lake College MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon.
Jack-O-Lantern and costume contests for area youth, a classic car cruise-in and a blues concert are among activities planned for the day.
Coffee for the new establishment is provided by The Breve Espresso Company. Free samples of flavored coffees will be available Saturday, as well as hot apple cider and other offerings.
Among the varieties of coffee percolating at the shop are Bourbon Pecan, Irish Creme, Kenya-Tanzania Pea Berry Blend and Vanilla. For those who favor a simpler taste, house and house decaffeinated styles are available.
The Blue VooDoo Band is set to perform from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday while the King City Kustom Cruzers host the Halloween Cruise-In and Classic Car Show from 2 to 7 p.m. in the MarketPlace’s Center Court, weather permitting. There is no entry fee for the car show and prizes will be awarded.
KCKC representatives also will serve as judges in two special events geared for youngsters Saturday. A Jack-O-Lantern Contest for grade school students will be judged between 9 a.m. and noon, with a $200 U.S. Savings Bond going to the first-place winner and $100 and $75 bonds awarded to second and third places. The first- and second-place winners of the costume contest, which also will be judged by car show representatives, will take home $100 and $75 savings bonds.
When you are ready to relax with a cup of gourmet coffee, step inside the shop, where customers are welcomed with food and drink as well as a big-screen television. Plans for the near future call for a free, wireless Internet bar featuring desktops and laptops.
Other menu offerings at the shop include espresso, cappuccino, latte, soft drinks, shakes, hand-dipped ice cream, bagels, muffins, biscotti, pretzels, cheesecake and cookies, among others. Operating hours for the RLC Coffee Shop are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
