Ina-RLC Institute of Lifelong Learning hosts various Mark Twain-themed events for The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
Get ready to read with "The Big Read Book Review The Adventures of Tom Sawyer!" Join RLC this spring with a book reading and review. You will be provided with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the classic written by Mark Twain, prior to the book review, held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, from 9-11am at the RLC Learning Resource Center. This event is part of The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. The instructor will be Beth Mandrell and the class is completely free! Come to enjoy, learn and talk about this classic tale.
Come and meet the great Mark Twain…impersonator! Robert Valentine will amaze you with his wonderful storytelling abilities dressed as Mark Twain in "Mark Twain On the River." He has performed his one-man show since it was first staged in 1973. He has logged over 1,000 performances. "The 'Twain Show," he says, "is the essence of storytelling. It's like studying with a master storyteller, so that your own storytelling seems to improve without even trying." Join us for this FREE entertaining event on March 25, 2009 with two performances from 11am-noon or 2-3pm in the RLC Theater as Mr. Valentine portrays Mark Twain and provides a look into the life of Samuel Clemens.
Spend a day with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Becky Thatcher as you discover the delightful home of Samuel Clemens on the "Hannibal, MO Tour Home of Mark Twain". On this exciting trip, RLC is teaming up with The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. Our journey will begin traveling by motor coach leaving RLC on Saturday, April 25th at 7am with a pick up stop in Mt. Vernon on the way. Upon arrival at our destination, we will meet Tom and Becky. Then it's off to lunch at the Mark Twain Dinette. The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum properties include six historically significant buildings and two exciting, interactive museums, whose collections boast fifteen original Norman Rockwell paintings. See firsthand how a young boy growing up in the small village became one of the world's most beloved authors. But that's not all...after we spend the day exploring Hannibal, we will take a trolley ride through the town. Estimated arrival back at RLC is 9pm. Don't miss out on this interesting and unique bus tour. Seating is limited, so call today to reserve your spot! The registration fee of $110 includes our step-on guide, Marilyn Schild, tour fees, lunch and transportation-fast food dinner stop will be on your own.
