INA - Rend Lake College announces trips and educational tours being offered through The Institute of Lifelong Learning this spring.
We'll have you saying Mmmmm…all the way through St. Louis on our "Sweets of St. Louis Bakery Tour." Choose from two pick-up locations on Friday, March 27th- either at the RLC Historic Schoolhouse at 7am or the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon at 7:30am. Our first bakery stop will be Dad's, the famous home of scotch oatmeal cookies. Your mouth will be watering as we head for our next stop, El Chico's, where we will meet the owner's children. Then it's off to The Hill, as we visit Gamboro Family's Missouri Bakery and an Italian grocery, DiGregorio's, where you will find rare items not in your local grocery store. Lunch will be at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, where we will enjoy a cafeteria-style meal. Then it's off to Jilly's Cupcakes, where cupcakes have been taken to the next level! Our last stop will be at the new London Tea Room. It's so authentic you wouldn't be surprised if the Queen stopped by! $71 registration fee includes, tour fees, transportation, and samples from all stops, but lunch is on your own. Approximate arrival times are 5:00 pm at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon and 5:30pm at the main campus in Ina.
Spend a day with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Becky Thatcher as you discover the delightful home of Samuel Clemens on the "Hannibal, MO Tour Home of Mark Twain". On this exciting trip, RLC is teaming up with The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. Our journey will begin traveling by motor coach leaving RLC on Saturday, April 25th at 7am with a pick up stop in Mt. Vernon on the way. Upon arrival at our destination, we will meet Tom and Becky. Then it's off to lunch at the Mark Twain Dinette. The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum properties include six historically significant buildings and two exciting, interactive museums, whose collections boast fifteen original Norman Rockwell paintings. See firsthand how a young boy growing up in the small village became one of the world's most beloved authors. But that's not all...after we spend the day exploring Hannibal, we will take a trolley ride through the town. Estimated arrival back at RLC is 9pm. You can either board the RLC bus at the RLC Historic Schoolhouse at 8am or in Big John's Parking Lot in Benton at 8:20am to travel the back roads of Southern Illinois, visiting some unique and fascinating attractions. Our journey will take us from river to river, Ohio to Mississippi, as we remember the tragic story of the Cherokee's forcible removal from their homeland. Our guide, Sue Glasco will inform us about the Trail of Tears, as we visit destinations that include Golconda Levy, Buel House, Campground Cemetery, 9 miles of original route, Jonesboro Square, Dutchcreek Campground, Silkwood Inn, and more. And, of course, we can't drive by the Chocolate Factory without stopping by! $55 registration fee includes tour fees, lunch, and transportation.

On this 7-day exclusive deluxe motor coach bus tour, you will follow the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail from the Mississippi River to Oklahoma as we visit sites certified by the National Park Service to learn more about the Cherokee. This tragic story will be told by guide, Marilyn Schild, to inform you more about the most civilized tribe of Native Americans who were forcibly removed from their beautiful homeland in the Southeast to the Indian Territory in the West, which is now Oklahoma.
