Five tours, trips planned from March through October

INA, Ill. (Feb. 20, 2014) – Whether you’d like to see our state capitol, or travel abroad to visit the narrow streets of Italy, Rend Lake College’s Community and Corporate Education Department has a seat with your name on it. Five tours are scheduled between March and October in St. Louis, Springfield, Wyoming, and Italy.

The Irish in St. Louis Tour will take participants to St. Louis to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a guide through the historic Irish neighborhood of Dogtown on March 11. Stops in the neighborhood include The Kerry Cottage and O’Malley’s Irish Shop. Lunch will be provided at Dooley’s Pub with a performance by Irish dancers. If available, the tour will also stop in the St. James the Greater Catholic Church.

The guide for the day, Declan Rutan, is an Irish American who holds a minor in Irish Studies and who traveled to and studied at the University College Dublin. Registration for the trip costs $109, which includes tour fees, lunch, transportation, and gratuities. The bus will leave the Historic Schoolhouse on the Ina campus at 7:30 a.m. and the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon at 8 a.m. Return times will be 5:30 p.m. at the MarketPlace and 6 p.m. at the Historic Schoolhouse.

The following month, a tour of Springfield is scheduled for April 24. Spring in Springfield Tour will be with a step-on guide visiting the Old State Capitol, site of presidential candidacy announcements by Abraham Lincoln in 1858 and Barack Obama in 2007; Lincoln’s Tomb; and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library. Lunch will be provided at the historic Chesapeake Seafood House.

Registration costs $95 for guide fees, tour fees, lunch, gratuities, and transportation. The bus will leave from the Historic Schoolhouse at 6:30 a.m. and from the MarketPlace at 7 a.m. The bus will return to the MarketPlace at 8 p.m. and the Historic Schoolhouse at 8:30 p.m.

If you’ve got a sweet spot, then the May 9 Sweet St. Louis Tour is right up your alley. This tour will stop at a number of St. Louis shops, including Soulard Market; Sweetie Pie’s for lunch; the Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate Factory; Missouri Baking Company; and dessert at The Fountain on Locust.

The bus will leave the Historic Schoolhouse at 7:45 a.m., with departure from the MarketPlace following at 8:15 a.m. Return times will be 7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively. Registration costs $109, and includes samples, lunch, dessert, transportation, and gratuities.

There are also two bigger trips planned for this summer and fall: Northern National Parks and Reflections of Italy. More information is available on these tours by contacting RLC’s Community and Corporate Education Department.

A tour of the Northern National Parks will include stops at Yellowstone National Park and Old Faithful Geyser, and Grand Tetons. Participants will stay four nights in Jackson, Wy. The tour is scheduled for June 13-20 and registration includes transportation, lodging, and 11 meals at $2,099.

This fall, the Reflections of Italy tour is scheduled for September 23 through October 2, and will feature stops in Rome, Perugia, Florence, Venice, and Malpensa. Two nights in Rome will include visits to the Colosseum, Piazza Venezia, and Piazza Navona, and much more. A special tour will also be given of the Academy gallery in Florence to see Michelangelo’s Statue of David. The tour costs $3,249 per person, which includes transportation, lodging, and 14 meals.
