Food sanitation and sanitation refresher courses are coming to the area courtesy of Rend Lake College. Restaurant workers, school cooks, those who sell food at farmer’s markets and bake sales, and others can become certified in food sanitation, and those whose licenses need renewal can do so through the refresher course.

In Food Sanitation (CULA 1205), students will learn to identify the causes of food-borne illness, identify and apply correct procedures for cleaning and sanitizing, recognize problems and potential solutions associated with facility, equipment and layout, and understand the Illinois code related to food service establishments. Successful completion of this course prepares students to take the State of Illinois exam for Management and Sanitation Training. Students must bring a photo identification to class.

The Food Sanitation class costs $96. The ServSafe Essentials textbook is available at the RLC Bookstore on the Ina campus. Upcoming offerings will be held in Ina, Mt. Vernon and Pinckneyville:

  • 8 a.m.-5 p.m. July 28 and Aug. 4 (two Saturday sessions), Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus Room 101.
  • 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 11 and 18 (two Saturday sessions), RLC Campus in Ina, Advanced Technology Center Room 118.
  • 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 15 and 22 (two Saturday sessions), RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon, Room 403.
  • 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Oct. 13 and 20, 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Oct. 27 (three Saturday sessions), RLC Campus in Ina, Advanced Technology Center Room 118.

In the Food Sanitation Refresher (CULA 1605) course, students will refresh their knowledge of food-borne illness by identifying and applying correct procedures for cleaning and sanitizing; recognize problems and potential solutions associated with facility, equipment and layout; and understand the Illinois code related to food service establishments. Successful completion of this course provides the student with a renewed license. Student must bring current Illinois sanitation license to class and photo identification. The class costs $46.50. Course offerings are:

  • 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 28, RLC Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus Room 101.
  • 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, RLC Campus in Ina, Advanced Technology Center Room 118.
  • 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon, Room 403.
  • 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, RLC Campus in Ina, Advanced Technology Center Room 118.
