Fantasy illustrator Velhagen hosts art demo at RLC

INA, Ill. (March 3, 2020) — Rend Lake College students got a firsthand look at the creative process on Tuesday when fantasy illustrator Eric Velhagen conducted a live art demonstration on campus.

Velhagen’s art has been on display at RLC for the past several weeks as part of the college’s ongoing Visiting Artist Series. The art demonstration allowed him to interact with students and members of the public as he worked on creating a painting in real time. Students gained perspective on what drives an artist creatively and the thought process that goes into producing a work of art.

Additionally, Velhagen will be on campus again on Thursday, March 19 for the annual RLC Student Art Show, which takes place 6-8 p.m. He will be a guest judge for this year’s competition.

A fixture in the fantasy artwork community, Velhagen was recently chosen as the artist for the 2018 “Game of Thrones” calendar illustrations. The Albuquerque resident has appeared in a number of publications and has presented at numerous galleries and conventions, including IlluXCon, Spectrum Fantastic Art Live!, Albuquerque Comic-Con and FantasyCon. His paintings “Fantasy Feast” and “Felines” were both nominated for Chesley Awards.
