This month at RLC: A Master Class with Jon Garrett

INA, Ill. (March 3, 2020) — Accomplished musician Jon Garrett, artistic director of the Gateway Men’s Chorus, will teach a master class in music and voice at Rend Lake College in March.

The class will take place at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 in the Learning Resource Center, Room 107. The event is free to attend and open to the public. The class is being held in conjunction with the International Transgender Day of Visibility.

Garrett is a lyric tenor, collaborative pianist, music director, composer, recording artist, musical theater conductor, and instructor of piano and voice. He has performed with Union Avenue Opera, Winter Opera St. Louis, the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, Missouri Ballet Theatre, Gateway Opera and Stray Dog Theatre. His compositions have been featured in performances by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, the St. John UCC Chancel Choir, SCC Singers and Missouri Ballet Theatre.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Missouri, St. Louis, where he studied piano with Evelyn Mitchell and voice with Dr. Mark Madsen. Most recently, he studied Collaborative Piano and Vocal Performance at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. His studies included a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy with an emphasis on transgender voice. 

The Gateway Men’s Chorus is a St. Louis-based LGBTQ chorus in its 33rd season. Garrett is currently the artistic director of the chorus and also serves as Adjunct Music Faculty at Saint Louis University and St. Charles Community College. A multifaceted artist, Garrett works and performs as a lyric tenor, collaborative pianist, music director, composer, recording artist, musical theater conductor and instructor of piano and voice.

Along with the Gateway Men’s Chorus, Garrett has performed with Union Avenue Opera, Winter Opera St. Louis, the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, Missouri Ballet Theatre, Gateway Opera and Stray Dog Theatre. His studies included a postbaccalaureate certificate in Vocal Pedagogy with an emphasis on transgender voice. He also serves as the Minister of Music at Grace United Church of Christ in O’Fallon, Mo.
