Here is what is coming in February:
Food sanitation: Learn all about the proper practices and procedures of handling food in the Food Sanitation course taught by Erin House. The course prepares participants to understand Illinois’ regulations related to food service establishments by teaching proper techniques for cleaning, sanitizing and recognizing problems in the industry. The course also prepares participants for the ServSafe exam for management and sanitation training, which may be necessary to work in the restaurant business in Illinois depending on your role. The exam will be at the end of the second session. Students are asked to bring a photo ID to class and the ServSafe Essentials textbook is required and available at the RLC Bookstore or online. The class will be from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on both Saturday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 8. The class costs $180 is located in the Rend Lake College Advanced Tech Center, Room 118.
Intro to Cross Stitch: Are the intricacies of needlepoint a little daunting? Learn the basics of cross-stitch techniques required to create your own needlepoint projects in this class taught by Tiffany Hulsey. The class is for ages 10 and up and runs at a cost of $12 plus an additional $5 for supplies. It will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4 at the RLC Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus, Room 101.
PSB Test Prep: Looking get a career started in health occupations? The Psychological Services Bureau exam is one of the first steps in getting accepted into many of RLC’s Allied Health programs. But this test prep course will help make the exam a little less intimidating. The course is designed to help improve study habits and PSB scores and each section of the PSB will be reviewed and assessed. The course, taught by Joseph Marlo, takes place 3-5 p.m. on Tuesdays from Feb. 11 to March 10. There will be no class on Feb. 18. The course will cost $40 and take place in the Academic Building, Room 212.
Stencil and Paint Workshop: Learn the skills to needed to create your own home décor. The Stencil and Paint Workshop shares techniques for custom pieces, using a selection of timeless paint colors, finishing techniques and materials. Participants can create items such as wood signs, pillow cases, wall hangings, porch signs, doormats, table placemats and zipper pouches among many more. No experience is needed (ages 10 and up are welcome) and supplies are provided. Sharon Corn will be the instructor for the class, which costs $15 plus a $10 supply fee per session. The class is 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Rend Lake College’s Learning Resource Center, Room 103.
Cooking for Couples: Looking for a date night idea around Valentine’s Day? Cooking for Couples offers a unique night out as couples can learn to work together in kitchen and experience a delicious dinner for two at the end of class. Dinner will include an appetizer, entrée and dessert. The class is for couples ages 21 and older and costs $60 per couple. It takes place from 3-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at the RLC Student Center, Room 103. The class is taught by Chef Robert Wilson.
Cardio Blast: Get ready to burn calories without the use of weights or complicated gym equipment. Cardio Blast offers a full-body workout for people of all fitness levels. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat, towel and water to the class, which is taught by Charlotte Loss. The course costs $25 and takes place 1-1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays between Feb. 20 and March 24. The class will take place in the gym, Room 110.
Rumble: Mix martial arts with cardio and you get Rumble, an easy-to-master group exercise for any skill level. No martial arts experience is required for this full-body workout taught by Shelby Counts. Cost of the course is $50 and it takes place from 4:45-5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 25 to March 26. The class will be at the REC, Room 119.
Caribbean Cuisine: Dreaming of warmer weather this winter? You can at least enjoy the food of the fair-climate Caribbean this February during the Caribbean Cuisine course taught by Chef Jeff Fairbanks. Fairbanks will teach participants a number of classic Caribbean recipes. The course costs $15 plus a $25 supply fee. It will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 in the Student Center, Room 120.
