Newbury and Lee receive RLC Automotive Car Show Scholarship

INA, Ill. (March. 25, 2019) - A pair of Rend Lake College students are the proud recipients of RLC Automotive Car Show Scholarship. The scholarships offered by the organization have helped several students pursue their passion for vehicles both inside and outside the classroom over the years.

The 2019 recipients are Tyler Newbury (Waltonville) and Jonathan Lee (Pinckneyville).

Newbury and Lee are both sophomores in the RLC Automotive Technology Program. They both share a passion for racing and are frequent attendees at local car shows.

After graduating from RLC, both hope to transfer to Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Automotive Program.

Newbury wants to eventually get a career in automotive design after he graduates.

“I want to go into automotive design to design brand new cars. I hope to end up in Bowling Green (Ky.) and work for General Motors down there at the Corvette plant,” Newbury said.

Lee has his sights set back home, hoping to return to Pinckneyville to open his own business.

Both students expressed deep gratitude for scholarship.

“I’m very appreciative,” Newbury said. “I’ve always gone to car shows. I like showing my work. It’s nice to have something like this that rewards students for helping out and being involved in the automotive community itself. We have a good community in Southern Illinois. There are car shows every weekend. It’s a good thing, especially the shows in DuQuoin and here at the college. That’s just a great thing to see.”

“This scholarship has been a big help. It’s nice to be able to learn something you’re interested in and have someone help you to do that,” Lee said.

Hot Rod Nights raised the funds for the scholarship via their 50/50 drawings throughout the season.
