Master computer basics with RLC's Community and Corporate Ed

INA, Ill. (Jan. 15, 2019) - It’s time to make good on those New Year’s resolutions to brush up on your computer skills, and classes offered through Rend Lake College’s Community and Corporate Education Division will help you get there.

The offerings start with Beginning Computers taught over two classes from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5 and Feb. 12. The class will be held in the RLC MarketPlace campus in Mt. Vernon, room 338. The cost of the class will be $25.

Gain basic internet and email skills with Internet and Email Basics. Join instructor Liz Jennings as she teaches about different browsers, links and web addresses to get started with the internet. Once students have the internet basics down Jennings will show how to obtain an email account, check your email, attach pictures and more. The class will run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7. The class will be held in the RLC MarketPlace campus in Mt. Vernon, room 338. The cost of the class will be $10.

In Linux for Home User, students will learn the basics of using Linux Mint, an easy-to-use operating system for personal use. The free system offers excellent security and provides all the basic programs needed to surf the web, send emails, create documents, produce presentations and much more. Linux also offers countless applications free to download, giving students limitless options for personalizing their own machine. Each student will get their own computer to customize. Instructor James Featherstone will be on hand to illustrate how to connect to the Internet, help with downloading free applications and answer any questions. Thanks to local donations, all participants will be able to keep their customized computer, excluding the monitor. The class will be taught from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 and Friday, April 12 in the Advanced Technology Center on Main Campus, room 178. Cost of the class will be $50.

Android: Up Close & Personal will cover the basics of using an Android phone. Instructor James Featherstone will be on hand to illustrate how to back-up text messages and voicemail, discuss security settings and various other interesting things. He will be happy to answer any questions about your device. The class will be taught from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 and Friday, April 26 in the Advanced Technology Center on Main Campus, room 178. The cost of the class is $15.

In Beginning MS Word participants will learn the fundamentals of word processing using Microsoft Word. Discover how to use the menu system and toolbars; open, reopen, print, save and close documents; insert/delete text, reverse an edit operation, apply font attributes to text and move text blocks. Students will be taught how to use Spelling/Grammar Checker, Thesaurus, the Help menu and how to customize the AutoCorrect Dictionary. The class will be taught from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 and March 12. The class will be held in the RLC MarketPlace campus in Mt. Vernon, room 338. The cost of the class will be $25.

If spreadsheets are more your interest, Beginning MS Excel will make working with numbers as easy as 1-2-3 by learning the fundamental operations of spreadsheets. Participants will learn how to use the menu system and toolbars; open, reopen, print and close workbooks and enter labels. Students will discover the secrets to adding values and formulas into worksheets, formatting spreadsheets by adjusting the size of columns/rows, using borders/shading and changing the page setup. The class will be taught from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2 and April 9. The class will be held in the RLC MarketPlace campus in Mt. Vernon, room 338. The cost of the class will be $25.
