INA, Ill. – The Rend Lake College men’s and women’s basketball teams have started the 2012-13 campaign strong. The Warriors are 3-0 and host the Paducah Predators at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Warriors are 4-0 and host Moberly Area at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Warriors have racked up wins against Southern Sports Institute (102-87), Ivy Tech (100-86) and South Suburban College (76-68) – the team that beat RLC in the opening round of the NJCAA DII Championship Tournament last season. Sophomore Noel Allen (Guttenburg, N.J.) led the Warriors against South Suburban with 22 points. Rend Lake had 11 players score.
Warriors Head Coach Randy House said his team’s 55 percent from the free-throw line needs to improve, but he was happy with the overall performance.
“I thought we played extremely hard, not always smart and a little suspect occasionally on shot selection, but they are a good group of kids and we are going to continue to get better.”
The Lady Warriors are beating teams by an average 28 points per game – with wins over Morthland (86-43), Lindenwood-Belleville (70-45), McKendree University JV (69-50) and Region XXIV opponent Lincoln Land Community College (74-48).
Against the Lady Loggers on Nov. 10, Rend Lake’s LaNeice Cannon (Madison, Wisc.) led the team with 22 and Elyse Jackson (Madison, Wisc.) had 11. Tazonda Gibbs (Detroit) scored nine, Tyra Gooch (Indianapolis) and Chelsea Smith (Detroit) had four each, Regina McClarn (Madison, Wisc.) had eight, Marquita Hilliard-Williams (Madison, Wisc.) had five, Jennifer Moeller (Nashville) had six, Kayla Murphy (Collinsville) and Zekaryah Thorn (Madison, Wisc.) each had a bucket, and Kristina Henley (Metropolis) had a point.
After hosting Moberly Area at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, the Lady Warriors will play at Moberly Area’s tournament on Nov. 23 and 24. The Warriors will head to Illinois Central at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, and host Lincoln Land at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20.
