No Compromise: Missouri's Role in the Civil War
Travel back in time as we visit the Missouri Civil War Museum and other locations.
We begin with a visit to the Old Courthouse and a ranger led tour. The Old Courthouse was the site of the first two trials of the pivotal Dred Scott case in 1847 and 1850. It was also where Virginia Minor's case for a woman's right to vote came to trial in the 1870s. We tour this historic structure, and visit the restored courtrooms to learn more about our 19th century judicial system. Next, we enjoy lunch at The Lodge at Grant’s Trail. This afternoon we visit the Missouri Civil War Museum. The MO Civil War Museum has become one of the largest Civil War Museums in the nation and will be one of the largest Civil War research libraries in the nation as well. Our focus is entirely on Missouri’s role in the American Civil War. We will conclude with a drive through Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, which was established during the Civil War in 1863 and is the final resting place for some 16,000 Civil War Soldiers. (Note: to see the Civil War tombstones, you will have to de-board the coach and walk – this can be optional). Tour fees, lunch, gratuities, and charter bus transportation are included.
You must pre-register by March 12th.

Churches of St. Louis
Enjoy a unique day of exploring the churches of St. Louis.
We will begin our day at Trinity Lutheran Church for a tour by Dennis Amman, sexton. He will show you the beautiful sanctuary, their priceless communion chalice (if available), and speak of the fascinating history of this church, which was the birthplace of today's Missouri Synod. Next we visit the Shrine of St. Joseph, with its vast history, this beautiful old church had its beginning in 1843. Founded by Jesuits to serve a residential German community, the church is the site of the only authenticated miracle in the Midwest. Next we enjoy lunch at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and take a tour of the church as well. After lunch, we visit and tour the Cathedral Basilica, an amazing architectural structure home to 83,000 square feet of mosaics. Round out our day with a visit to Christ Church Cathedral, an inspiring space for worship, prayer and advocacy for the neighborhood and city. The Cathedral is an example of 14th century Early English Gothic and is well-known for its stained glass windows, organ and its reredos, carved between 1909 and 1911 and shipped to the Cathedral in 230 cases, the reredos consist of 52 religious figures and biblical scenes in stone. (Please note, some churches may not be available due to funerals or other church functions that may arise. We will do our best to schedule the churches listed above, but may need to substitute at the last minute due to funerals, weddings, or special church ceremonies.) Tour fees, lunch, gratuities, and charter bus transportation are included.
You must pre-register by April 11th.

Cancellation of ClassesNothing kills a good program faster than waiting until the last minute to register. At some point we have to determine if enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Rend Lake College is a non-profit organization. We try to break-even on classes, at the same time we try to pay our instructors a fair wage for their time. If you are considering taking a class or you wish to show up the first night of class to register, please call and let us know. Otherwise, we must cancel low enrollment classes.
Withdrawal/RefundsStudents in Community Education classes may withdraw and receive a full refund by contacting a Rend Lake College Community Education representative at least 5 business days in advance of the first class or 10 business days in advance of a trip. No refunds will be given after that time, but a registration certificate will be issued in your name and MUST be used the following semester. No refunds or certificates will be issued following the first class session. Please call us if you must cancel a class at 437-5321, x 1714 or (800) 369- 5321, x 1714.
Course ContentCourse content may be altered at the discretion of the instructor(s), and may in some instances deviate from the catalog description. We try to be as accurate as possible in describing our classes, but we allow the instructor to teach what they feel is important.
Senior CitizensIn-district residents who are 60 years of age or older qualify as senior citizens for tuition purposes and are entitled to take college credit courses provided that class has the required number of tuition paying students enrolled and that the classroom has available space tuition-free. The college reserves the right to use the qualifying age for senior citizen waivers, as dictated by State statute, which is 65 years of age or older for specific programs and departments. This does not include applicable fees charged for credit classes, nor does it include Community Education (COMED or ILR ) classes . Senior citizens may be charged a fee of $50 or more for repeating classes more times than credit can be claimed.
ResidencyWe get many calls from individuals outside of the Rend Lake College District regarding out-of-district fees. With Community Education classes, there is no need to worry about being out-of-district. It does not affect your fees nor your attendance. We encourage any one who has an interest in our classes to attend.
