INA, Ill. (Jan. 24, 2018) - A season’s worth of hard work on the basketball court culminates every January and February in Southern Illinois during the SIJHSAA State Basketball Tournament. It’s an opportunity for some of the region’s most talented student-athletes to step on the big stage and play under the bright lights of Waugh Gymnasium.
This year, for the first time ever, Rend Lake College will give players a second opportunity to take to the hardwood and compete against the best the area has to offer. RLC’s Premiere Jr. High All-Star Classic will pit the 20 best players per class against each other on Feb. 25. Warriors Head Coach Tommy Holder hopes it will become an annual tradition.
“This new event will feature a total of six highly competitive basketball games,” explained Holder. “It is our hope to provide an opportunity for players to enjoy one more memory of playing junior high basketball on a big stage.”
Players will be selected out of the current crop of eighth graders in the association. The event aims to have 10 players per team for 20 total participants in each game.
All coaches in the SIJHSAA are asked to nominate five players from their class, with up to two from their own team and the remainder from opposing teams. Those nominations will be submitted to Holder’s office where he and his staff will assemble rosters on Jan. 31.
The games will begin at noon on Sunday, Feb. 25, with the Class S Girls All-Stars. Class S Boys will begin play at 1:30 followed by: Class M Girls at 3 p.m., Class M Boys at 4:30 p.m., Class L Girls at 6 p.m. and culminating with Class L Boys at 7:30.
Players participating in the event will wear either their home or away team jerseys, based on team placement. Each player selected will receive an RLC Premier Jr. High All-Star Classic tee-shirt.
Coaches are asked to email their nominations to RLC Assistant Coach Sam Ficker at .
