RLAY OTTERS LOG THREE STATE CHAMPS, NATIONAL QUALIFIER AT IL/MO YMCA CHAMPIONSHIPS
TEAM - The Rend Lake Aquatic Youth Otters swim team logged three state champions, six finalists and a national qualifier at the IL/MO YMCA Championships in March. CLICK HERE for a larger image.
JOLIET, Ill. – The Rend Lake Aquatic Youth Otters girls’ swim team took 15th, and the boys 24th, out of 49 teams last month at the Illinois/Missouri Area YMCA Championships in Joliet. The Otters had three state champions, six finalists and 19 medal winners, including a national qualifier in Benton’s Cheyenne Rhine.
Rhine, 14, swam a national qualifying time of 2:07.64 in the 13-14 girls’ 200 yard backstroke and is competing at YMCA nationals in that event through Saturday, at the brand-new aquatics center in Greensboro, N.C. Rhine also took runner-up in the 100 back and 200 individual medley, and was a state finalist in the 100 breaststroke
The top eight in each event advanced to finals and the top 16 received a medal.
Hunter Braden, 10, of McLeansboro, was state champion in the 50 freestyle and 100 free. Braden took runner-up in the 50 butterfly.
Isabel Heitmeyer, 12, of Mount Vernon, took the state championship in the 200 IM and was a finalist in the 200 free and as a member of the 200 medley relay.
Andrew Roberts, 11, of Mount Vernon, won the state championship in the 11-12 boys’ 200 IM. Roberts tied for second in the 50 back.
Additional state finalists for the Otters included 12-year-old Talia Carello (Mount Vernon) in the 50 free; 11-year-old Olivia Cravens (DuQuoin) in the 100 free and 200 free; and the 11-12 girls’ 200 medley relay team of 12-year-old Savannah Cheek (Pinckneyville), Heitmeyer, Carello and Cravens.
