ZEIGLER, Ill. - Zeigler-Royalton High School senior golfer Chandra Weddle signed a national letter of intent Thursday to play for Cindy Corn at Rend Lake College in the fall.
Weddle, 18, of Royalton, became her high school’s first-ever state qualifier in golf when she competed at the tournament as a junior. As a senior, she qualified for sectionals but did not advance to state. She is the daughter of Darrin and Peggy Weddle.
As an All-South Conference selectee, she was Zeigler-Royalton’s MVP all four years with a high school career stroke average of 43. She was joined Thursday by her parents, ZR Athletic Director Jeremy May and Girls Golf Coach Matt Morgan, and Corn, who said she really likes Weddle’s potential at the collegiate level.
“I think she will be a very coachable kid,” said Corn. “I think she has good golf management skills and strong fundamentals. There will not be many changes to her golf swing, but we will need to work on improving her strength in the weight room. That will help her get longer off the tee and manage the golf course better. Her short game is her strongest asset right now.”
Weddle is the third signee for Corn so far this recruiting season. She joins Massac County’s Laura Bremer and Mt. Carmel’s Kylee Henager on the fall freshman roster. Current freshmen Lady Warriors include Flo Glodde of Celebration, Fla., Taylor Koeller of Marissa and Lexie Shoemaker of Mt. Vernon. Corn said she expects all three freshmen to be back next year.
