SIJHSAA GIRLS BASKETBALL FINALS SET
INA, Ill. - Championship matchups are set in the 2012 Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association girls basketball tournaments at Rend Lake College.
CLASS L - The Lady Pups and coach Greg Shafer from Flora Junior High School will take on the Lady Cubs and coach Andy Harrell from Cartervillle Intermediate School at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.
Flora advanced by beating Carlyle 36-26 Thursday night after just avoiding elimination in a 33-30 squeaker against Sparta in the opening round this past weekend. Carterville beat West Frankfort by 10 points in the opening round and handled Eldorado a 54-40 loss on Thursday.
Carlyle and Eldorado will meet in the Class L consolation game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.
CLASS M - The Aviston Lady Eagles and Breese Lady Bobcats will play in the Class M championship game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.
After beating the Lady Royals from Red Bud 36-18 on Friday, Aviston and coach Jesse Essenpreis pulled off a 35-29 win over Fairfield on Monday to advance to Friday's final game. Also on Monday, Breese, coached by Cole Grapperhaus, came away with a decisive 53-29 victory over Christopher. That win followed up another impressive performance when the Bobcats beat Unity Point 45-32 in the opening round.
Fairfield and Christopher will face off in the Class M consolation final at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.
CLASS S - The Class S championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, will feature Gerard Albers' Lady Bulldogs from Germantown and the Lady Braves from Bartelso Elementary School, coached by Gigi Kohrmann.
Germantown beat Mt. Vernon's St. Mary Lady Knights 38-24 in the opening round before finishing off St. Joe (Olney) 42-15 tonight in the Final Four. Bartelso walked away from its Final Four game this evening with another double-digit win, 49-38 over Jefferson (Metropolis). The Lady Braves topped Giant City 45-26 in the opening round.
St. Joe and Jefferson will play in the consolation final at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.
