BENTON, Ill. – Benton Consolidated High School volleyball libero Emily Tate signed her national letter of intent Wednesday to play for Sara Crews at Rend Lake College in the fall. Tate was joined at her signing event by her parents, Kevin and Julie Tate, Crews and Rangerette coach Tony Phelps.
Tate said she likes the idea of staying close to home and is undecided on a major. She played volleyball all four years at BCHS and got her opportunity at libero when the team’s defensive specialist was injured her junior season. She took to the role well and even landed in Rangerette annals’ top 25 in digs her senior year with 290 – a big stat in Benton’s outstanding 37-2 season.
“If there is a ball in her neighborhood, she is going to get to it,” Phelps said. “She has all kinds of athletic talent. She just excelled in that spot. We have been very fortunate the last two years to have super teams that [combined for] 74 wins ... and she was a mainstay on those teams.”
Crews said that on the night she attended a BCHS volleyball match to recruit, she wasn’t even there to see Tate in particular. But that one match was all she needed.
“She had an amazing game,” Crews said. “I just had to get her.”
Crews revealed that Tate’s freshman spot at RLC may just be libero. She said Tate reminded her of Jessica Engel, the Lady Warriors’ sophomore libero who is graduating in May.
