INA, Ill. (July 2, 2012) - Student-athletes on Rend Lake College teams in volleyball, tennis, softball and women’s golf have been recognized nationally for their performances in the classroom.
These teams at RLC earned spots on the National Junior College Athletic Association’s 2011-2012 All-Academic Teams list. To qualify, teams must have a combined grade point average of 3.0 or better. According to the NJCAA, 450 teams qualified for academic team accolades in the 2011-12 term. Nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA for the 2011-2012 academic year on more than 3,500 teams in 28 different sports, the Association stated on its website.
“ We are very proud of our athletes and coaches for their efforts in achieving such academic success on a total team basis,” said Tim Wills, director of athletics at RLC. “It is obvious that our coaches do a great job of not only recruiting quality student-athletes, but also do an excellent job of emphasizing the importance of academic success to their athletes. It is also obvious that we have a great many of our athletes who take their education pursuits very seriously and strive to achieve excellence in the classroom as well as on the field or court. Congratulations to all of these teams for their success.”
The Lady Warriors volleyball team, coached by Sara Crews, earned a combined 3.42 GPA. RLC volleyball is 12th on the list of 76 women’s volleyball teams across the country that qualified. Team members are Jessica Engel (Troy, Ill.), Chelsey Hafford (Hoyleton, Ill.), Kourtney Heggemeier (Nashville, Ill.), Bethany Hensley (Salem, Ill.), Amber Mocaby (Pittsburg, Ill.), Jennifer Moeller (Nashville, Ill.), Mackenzie Newman (Nashville, Ill.), Jilissa Payne (Whittington, Ill.), Breanne Pelker (Scheller, Ill.), Melanie Rhine (Nashville, Ill.), NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement Award recipient Ashley Slack (Sesser, Ill.), Morgan Waters (Marion, Ill.) and NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement Award recipient Megan Wren (Harrisburg, Ill.).
The Lady Warriors tennis team, coached by Dave Junkins, earned a combined 3.31 GPA. RLC tennis is 13th on the list of 29 women’s tennis teams across the country that qualified. Team members are Chelsea Cross (Belle Rive, Ill.), Chelsea Flatt (Benton, Ill.), NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement Award recipient Kylie Pickel (Mount Vernon, Ill.), Allison Reed (Mount Vernon, Ill.), Shaelynn Tice (Belle Rive, Ill.) and Alyssa Williams (Benton, Ill.)
The Lady Warriors softball team, coached by Dave Ellingsworth, earned a combined 3.26 GPA. RLC softball is 37th on the list of 90 softball teams across the country that qualified. Team members are Kendyl Ahrens (Poseyville, Ind.), Annie Borowiak (Nashville, Ill.), Taylor Cicardi (Pinckneyville, Ill.), Emily Cripps (Herrin, Ill.), Laura Fleri (Mount Vernon, Ill.), Samantha Hicks (Elkville, Ill.), Breanne Pelker (Nashville, Ill.), Samantha Quisenberry (Marion, Ky.), Alaina Reeves (Mount Vernon, Ill.), NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement Award recipient Chelsea Steele (McLeansboro, Ill.), Taylor Thomas (Arcola, Ill.), Hannah Thompson (Jackson, Mo.), Samantha Watkins (Johnston City, Ill.), Katelyn Weaver (Carmi, Ill.), Misty Webster (Thompsonville, Ill.), Molly Whaley (Benton, Ill.), Corinne Wildeman (Mount Vernon, Ind.) and Erica Wilson (O’Fallon, Ill.).
The Lady Warriors women’s golf team, coached by Cindy Corn, earned a combined 3.18 GPA. RLC women’s golf is ninth on the list of nine women’s golf teams across the country that qualified. Team members are Kirsti Auten (McLeansboro, Ill.), NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence recipient Hannah Gill (Carterville, Ill.), Florentina Glodde (Celebration, Fla.), Taylor Koeller (Marissa, Ill.), Keeghan May (Nashville, Ill.), Gabbi Schuerman (Decatur, Ill.) and Lexie Shoemaker (Mount Vernon, Ill.).
