Surgical Technologist/ Central Service Technician

Department:  Surgery / Central Service                                                     

Status: Part time     

Shift: Shifts will be scheduled based upon surgical case schedule

Position Purpose:  The Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.  He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.  He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.  The Central Service Technician coordinates and maintains activities relating to the inspection, assembling, and packaging of surgical instruments and equipment and medical/surgical materials according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functional supply of materials.  Central Service Technician performs other duties as assigned or required.



Education: Completion of an accredited program in Surgical Technology.

Certification: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the NBSTSA preferred. 

Experience: 6 months – 1 year experience preferred, but not required.

Proficiencies: Instrument and equipment recognition and proper preparation of instruments. Computer skills in a Windows environment.

Knowledge: Aseptic techniques and infection control practices applicable to surgical procedures and processes.  Various medical supplies used in an acute care facility.  Sterilization and maintenance of surgical instruments. Medical terminology.  Gowning, scrubbing and gloving procedures.  Universal precautions for handling blood and body fluids.

Abilities: Ability to assist doctors and nurses before, during and after a procedure or operation. Ability to anticipate the needs of staff in preparing and passing surgical materials during a procedure or operation.  Ability to operate equipment according to standards.  Assist in accounting for surgical instruments during a procedure of operation.  Report usages during procedures. 

Other: Ability to stand for long periods of time and remain alert.
