RLC Dance Team Information
WHO ARE WE?
The RLC Dance Team is a program at Rend Lake College that started in August of 2005. We are a competitive team that strives to better ourselves as a team and bring positive recognition to Rend Lake College. We are looking for dancers who love hard work, who are ready to increase their ability levels while improving technique, and above all … love to dance!
Goals
As a team, we have several long term goals we try to accomplish by the end of the season. These include but are not limited to:
- Attain an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency in dance techniques.
- Gain skills to create dance sequences and develop a movement vocabulary which aids in self discovery and expression.
- Grow in appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of dance as a form of personal expression and lifelong learning.
- Gain new friendships and skills that will carry with you while attending and after graduation from RLC.
- Prepare dancers to move on to a University setting with their dance abilities.
- And above all.....to maximize your college experience by doing something that you love and enjoy doing!
WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE WE INVOLVED IN AT RLC?
We provide entertainment at home basketball games and participate in campus-wide student activities. In addition, we host a “Lil’ Laker Girl” summer dance camp for children ages 7 through 14. Also, in conjunction with other student athletic programs, the RLC Dance Team participates in a campus-wide clean-up twice each year to ensure the beauty of the college. In addition, the RLC Dance Team makes public appearances throughout the area to promote a positive image for themselves and the college. This summer, the RLC Dance Team will attend a dance camp taught by choreographer, Bruce Campbell to gain new material and improve their technical skills. The RLC Dance Team will also be performing at a St. Louis Cardinals game and participate in at least 2 other competitions in hopes of attaining a bid to Nationals.
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF THE DANCE TEAM ACADEMICALLY?
The RLC Dance Team is required to follow the academic guidelines set by RLC which govern all athletic programs. As a member, each dancer must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 2.0 or higher (4.0 scale) to remain eligible for the team, and must meet study hall requirements of 3 hours per week.
ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE?
Yes! Rend Lake College provides assistance to members of its athletic department. The amount is determined by the funds available, and then divided among the members of the team.
WHAT ABOUT TRYOUTS?
Tryouts are generally held in April and will be announced as the time nears. Tryouts are based on technique, choreography, and overall dance ability. Anyone trying out for the Laker Girls should bring a 0:45-1:15 jazz routine showcasing their dance ability and level of performance. Dancers may also choose to perform either a lyrical/modern or hip-hop routine no longer than 0:30. Previous dance experience is required. Dancers should provide at least 2 letters of recommendation from previous dance instructors/coaches. The letters should each be individually sealed and signed across the seal.
