WHAT IS UPWARD BOUND?
Upward Bound is a federally funded college preparatory program designed to provide academic support, personal/career counseling, and cultural enrichment to participants who have the academic ability to be successful in college.
UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM YEAR
The ACADEMIC YEAR component emphasized academic achievement and goal setting and includes:
- Weekly tutorial sessions at the student's target high school with Upward Bound staff members
- One Saturday per month students participate in "Saturday College" at Rend Lake College for career planning, assessment testing, and enrichment classes
- Field trips including cultural/social/educational enrichment academic, career, personal, college, and financial aid counseling
The SUMMER PROGRAM is the most intensive aspect of the Upward Bound year. This component includes:
- One week residential program at RLC; students will be housed in RLC apartments located south of the campus.
- Five weeks of classes (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays) at the Rend Lake College campus in math, English, foreign language lab science and various elective classes
- Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for Upward Bound Career Internships. The purpose of the career internship is to give students the opportunity to learn more about a career he/she may be interested in by working at the site of a professional.
- End of the year trip to major cities which include campus tours, special events such as sports and recreational activities, theatrical plays, etc.
All activities are provided at NO COST TO THE STUDENT.
