MEN'S GOLF: Frosh Wright wins 41st DACC Invite, team 3rd
DANVILLE, Ill. – Rend Lake College’s Dean Wright was the only player to shoot under par both days at the 41st Annual Danville Area Community College Invitational.
Wright, 19, of Reading, England, shot a remarkable 4-under 68 on Saturday and a 3-under 69 on Sunday to win the title by nine strokes over Andy Koester from Springfield. RLC, as a team, finished third behind Parkland College’s A and B teams.
Before coming to RLC, Wright won many junior titles, became an under-14 state champion, was southeast England’s representative while enrolled at Highdown Secondary School, and made it as far as the third round of the national British Boys Championship. He holds the lowest round recorded at Ealing Golf Club - a 7-under 63.
The son of Thomas and Kim Wright shot a bogey-free 69 toward a 142 for fourth place in his first tournament playing for Rend Lake this year. His goals for the 2009-10 season are to become an All-American and help his team to a national championship. He wants to play golf at a university after RLC and eventually play professionally.
