INA, Ill.(Sept. 2, 2011) - Rend Lake College's Institute of Lifelong Learning announces its fall 2011 classes and day tours. The Institute of Lifelong Learning is an organization of retirement-age people who share a common interest in lifelong learning and cultural enrichment. The only requirement is a desire to learn. No grades are given.
Lifelong Learning Classes
Writing a Life Story is a course designed to show participants how to capture their memories or share an ancestor's story. This course will show participants how to get started by discovering different writing styles and learning great research tips. Instructor Jon Musgrave will show examples that help students get on their way to writing their tales. Writing a Life Story will be held from 9-11a.m., Tuesdays (3 Sessions), Sept. 27 - Oct. 18 and Nov. 8, in the Historic Schoolhouse on the RLC main campus in Ina. Registration is $30.
How to Play Bridge is a course designed to teach the basics of this fun four-player game. Participants will discover the rules of contract bridge as well as the play of cards. Participants will also learn a standard bidding system. Instructor Dan W. Evers will also introduce duplicate bridge. How to Play Bridge will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesdays (8 sessions), Sept. 28 - Nov.16, in the Historic Schoolhouse on the RLC main campus in Ina. Registration is $80.
In Genealogy Basics participants will learn the basics of Genealogy research. Instructor Jon Musgrave will show students how to search and document old census records and other public vital records. Participants will learn how to use the internet to find information on ancestors using both free genealogy sites as well as subscription sites. This course can help a beginner start his research or even enhance what someone has already compiled. A portion of this class will be held in a computer lab, therefore basic computer internet experience is required. A catered lunch will be provided. Genealogy Basics will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the Historic Schoolhouse on the RLC main campus in Ina. Registration is $45 and includes lunch.
Tall Tales of Southern Illinois will consist of some of the most unique tall tales about the people, places, and things in Southern Illinois. Instructor Sid Milliner will be sharing his knowledge of Southern Illinois tall tales, ghost stories and other folklore. Participants are encouraged to share their own experiences as well. Tall Tales of Southern Illinois will be held from 1-3 p.m., Tuesday, October 20, in the Historic Schoolhouse on the RLC main campus in Ina. Registration is $10.
Taste of St. Louis Bakeries is a tour of ethnic bakeries in St. Louis. A professional tour guide will show the group some of the best spots for delicious treats. The group will make stops and receive samples at Jilly's Cupcakes, Missouri Baking Co., Urzi's Italian Market, and Gooey Louie's. Lunch will be served at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. The group will also stop at Ted Drewes for frozen custard. Lunch and frozen custard are not included in the registration fee; however, baklava from the church is included. The registration fee includes samples, tour fees, gratuity, and transportation. Lunch and frozen custard are "on your own". Taste of St. Louis Bakeries Tour will be held Friday, Sept. 23. The RLC bus will depart from the Historic Schoolhouse in Ina at 6:45 a.m., and from the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon at 7:15 a.m. The bus is scheduled to return to Mt. Vernon at approximately 5:30 p.m. and to Ina by 6 p.m. The registration fee is $70.
St. Louis Cemetery Tour is an exclusive tour of some of St. Louis's famous cemeteries. A professional tour guide will take the group through Bellefontaine, Calvary, Jefferson Barracks, and the Jewish Cemetery. The group will enjoy a boxed lunch in the beautifully remodeled chapel at Bellefontaine. An organist will also perform a private performance for the group in the chapel. Participants should expect moderate walking. Registration fee includes tour fees, lunch, gratuity and transportation. St. Louis Cemetery Tour will be held Monday, Oct. 17. The RLC bus will depart from the Historic Schoolhouse in Ina at 7:30 a.m., and from the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon at 8 a.m. The bus is scheduled to return to Mt. Vernon at approximately 5:30 p.m., and to Ina by 6p.m. The registration fee is $65.
Participants will join step-on guide Sid Milliner on the RLC bus for a traveling history lesson about Southern Illinois. The group will visit local museums in Harrisburg and Murphysboro to learn more about the early Illinois frontier as well as some Civil War era information. The group will also enjoy local flora and fauna throughout the day. Lunch will be at Giant City Lodge and is included the fee. Registration fees include tour fees, lunch, gratuity, and transportation. Southern Illinois History Tour will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The RLC bus will depart from the Historic Schoolhouse at 8a.m. and from the MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon at 8:30 a.m. The bus is scheduled to return to Ina at 4:30 p.m., and Mt. Vernon at 5 p.m. The registration fee is $55.
