ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Rend Lake College wrestlers competed Sunday at the Maryville University Kaufman-Brand Open.
Walter Eiskant (Pinckneyville, Ill.) was pinned in his first match by Tyler Hartman of Ouachita Baptist in the 125 pound class. At 133 pounds, RLC’s Jovontae Coleman (Winston-Salem, N.C.) won 7-2 over Seth Hutchison of Ouachita Baptist before injury defaulting in his second match with King College’s Cullen King, and Antwan Davis (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was pinned by Baker’s Allen Gassman in the first round.
One of Rend Lake’s 141-pound wrestlers, Derek Dowdy (Evansville, Ind.), pinned Baker’s Josh Wolfe and Xavier Brown before losing 5-2 to Missouri University’s Brandon Wiest. Dowdy lost to fifth-place Tyler Galloway in the wrestlebacks. Felix Betancourt (Kissimmee, Fla.) won his first match 12-3 over King’s Blake Bowman and his second match 7-3 against Baker’s Joshua Haugen. Betancourt lost in the 141-pound quarterfinals 17-1 to Josh Myers of Ouachita Baptist and lost his first match in the wrestlebacks. Also at 141, RLC’s Jay Lanning (Pontiac, Ill.) lost his first match 16-0 to Missouri’s Nick Hucke – the eventual third-place finisher.
The Warriors’ Oshea Smith-Traylor (Belleville, Ill.) lost 10-4 in his first 157-pound match against Missouri’s Austin Lindsay. The two met again in the match for third place. Lindsay pinned Smith-Traylor, who finished fourth. Josh Boots (Evansville, Ind.) lost 15-0 to Dallas Smith of OB in the 184 pound division and took two matches in the wrestlebacks before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.
