Tarazz Watkins (Mt. Vernon) and Toni Taylor (Du Quoin) won tuition waivers for Rend Lake College’s Culinary Arts program after their respective first- and second-place finishes at the college’s annual Omelet Cook-Off.
The contest, held Tuesday, May 4, was open to any district high school students interested in enrolling in RLC’s Culinary Arts program.
Watkins placed first, winning the judges over with an ethnic-style three-egg omelet featuring roasted corn, black beans, peppers and sausage. Associate Culinary Arts Professor Diane Catalfamo praised the marketability and value these ethnic touches added to her creation, which she served with sauted tortilla strips and a choice of fajita sauce or southwest sauce.
Catalfamo said Taylor’s omelet was seasoned well and also was marketable. She said she also took notice of Taylor’s preparation and sanitation methods, such as not touching the ingredients with her bare hands and avoiding cross-contamination.
Dahlgren resident Brenda Roesch took third place. Catalfamo praised the appearance and presentation of the dish.
