You are never too old to let the games begin. Seniors from Illinois and surrounding states will be taking part in the Rend Lake College/Mt. Vernon Regional Senior Games on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5.
Although Rend Lake College has assisted with the Senior Games in past years, it has assumed the duties of hosting the event this year. The Senior Games had been organized by The Sunshine Center in Mt. Vernon, but last year the games did not catch flight due to a lack of personnel.
"We are resurrecting something that these people worked hard for," said Dawn Gibson, Community Education Director at RLC.
Rend Lake College, Mt. Vernon Township High School, Rend Lake Shooting Complex, Mt. Vernon’s Veterans Park, Indian Hills Golf Course in Mt. Vernon and Nu Bowl Lanes in Mt. Vernon will each host one or more events. Gibson said one goal for future Senior Games is to better centralize the separate events.
In order to participate, competitors must be 50 years of age or older as of May 28, 2004. Age categories will be 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89 and 90 and over. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be given to the top three finishers in each age group.
