Rend Lake College’s Community Education Department has two new classes available in the McLeansboro area.
There’s no need to go stir crazy this winter. Just sign up for “Cabin Fever Prevention Day,” Saturday, Feb. 19. After being dropped off at the front door of the indoor Belleville flea market, enjoy a time of reminiscing as you look through more than 100 booths of items from the past, or “ooh and aah” over new items available for purchase.
Following this time of discovering new treasures and shaking your heads in wonder at the value of items we so casually discarded as worthless, the group will enjoy a relaxing lunch stop at the St. Louis Bread Company. The day will end with a stop at the beautiful Fairview Heights Antique Mall. The bus will leave the Hamilton County Senior High School parking lot at 7 a.m., and will pick up passengers at 7:30 a.m. at Big John’s in Benton and at 8 a.m. at the Rend Lake College MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon. The course costs $25 plus lunch.
“Quilting: Paper Piecing and More” will be held over six Monday sessions, Feb. 28 through April 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton County Senior High School Room B153. The course costs $36 with an approximate supply cost of $20. Beginners and experienced seamstresses will enjoy piecing different quilt top patterns. Participants can create a full-size quilt during the course. A supply list will be mailed prior to the first session.
An old favorite, “Basket Making,” will return to McLeansboro for a four-session class to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays from March 3 through March 24 at Hamilton County Senior High School Room B153. The course costs $36 with an approximate supply fee of $15 for each completed basket.
This class is designed to acquaint the beginning weaver in the fundamentals of basket weaving, and also serves as an excellent refresher course for those with some experience.
