Rend Lake College’s Small Business Development Center is hosting several workshops this fall aimed at assisting small businesses and helping people find jobs.
“Lending for the Self Employed” (WKSP 5316-MP1) – 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, RLC MarketPlace Room 354A, $35. James Flagg, Vice President of Peoples National Bank, leads this course targeted toward entrepreneurs and self-employed business people. Included in the course will be a discussion of money and management and methods of funding new ventures through conventional and Small Business Administration financing.
“Guide to Background Checks” (WKSP 5361) – Available in two sections: MP1, 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5; and MP2, 9 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, Oct. 18. Both will be held at RLCMP Room 354A and are free of charge. Detective Ray Gilbert of the Mt. Vernon Police Department will lead both sessions. The purpose of this class is to educate and assist local businesses in protecting themselves against criminals who seek employment to steal customer identities, carry out internal theft, or who simply misrepresent their qualifications and work history. The business owner or manager’s best defense is a good background check.
“How to Start Your Own Business” (WKSP 5305) – Available in three sections: MP2, 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Sept. 13; MP4, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 22; and MP6, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 19. All sections will be held in RLCMP Room 338 and are free of charge. Curt Mowrer, Director of the RLC Small Business Development Center, will cover topics such as services available through the SBDC, legal structures for small business, registering a business, employee issues, developing a business plan, and financing options. This class is a must for prospective business owners.
“How to Start Your Own Business and Utilizing DCEO” (WKSP 5305) – Available in three sections: MP1, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 24, RLCMP Room 338; MP3, 6-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, RLCMP Room 343; and MP5, 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, RLCMP Room 338. There is no registration fee. John Gulley of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Mowrer will lead this course designed to guide business people to programs available through DCEO and SBDC agencies. Topics to be covered include services available, legal structures for business, how to register your business with the state, employee issues, developing a business plan and financing options.
“Controlling Unemployment Rates” (WKSP 5313-MP2) – 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, Sept. 22, RLCMP Room 354A, no registration fee. Join Bennett R. Krause of the Illinois Department of Employment Security and learn to control your company’s unemployment rates. The class will include instruction from IDES on several topics, such as employers’ rights to contest claims, chargeability, appeal rights, protest due dates and content. Mock adjunct interviews will be conducted.
“An Overview of IDES Employment Solutions” (WKSP 5313-MP1) – 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, RLCMP Room 354A, no registration fee. Krause also will lead this workshop targeted toward job seekers. Learn how to utilize Illinois Skills Match technology, veteran’s programs, Hire the Future, the Re-entry Employment Service Program and more. Anyone planning on changing jobs can upgrade their job readiness skills with this session.
