Become a certified Teacher of English as a Second Language through an evening graduate program offered through Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Classes will be hosted locally at the Rend Lake College MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon.
Students in this 18-credit-hour program will take one course per semester, including summers, to complete the certificate in two years. The courses will be presented in a distance learning format, with students participating simultaneously at both the SIUE and Mt. Vernon sites. Mt. Vernon students may need to drive to Edwardsville once or twice each semester.
Those interested are encouraged to register early because space is limited and the program is expected to fill quickly. The first course in the sequence, Principles of Linguistics, begins Fall Semester 2006.
To register, visit www.siue.edu/ENGLISH/Grad/application.html. You must possess a bachelor’s degree and be accepted to the SIUE Graduate School as well as the Department of English to register for this class. Students do not need to enroll with RLC; SIUE is granting credit for these graduate classes. The normal tuition and fees for SIUE will apply. There is no foreign language requirement to enroll or for most employment opportunities.
The classes will be led by SIUE faculty. The distance learning equipment will allow students at the Mt. Vernon site to interact spontaneously and in real time with instructors in Edwardsville.
In addition to Principles of Linguistics, three other core courses will be offered in Mt. Vernon: Language and Culture; Second Language Acquisition; and Methods for Teaching English as a Second Language. Two other elective courses, yet to be determined, also will be offered at the MarketPlace. Students may choose to substitute different electives, but these will need to be taken on the Edwardsville campus.
Upon completion of the program, students will have a certification to teach adults. Many people find work in community college or business settings or work overseas.
A K-12 endorsement requires many of the same classes which will be offered in Mt. Vernon, so students wishing to pursue that certification will have a great start. The certificate program also offers a great start for students who want to pursue a master’s degree in TESL, which is available by taking additional courses at the SIUE campus.
Certified teachers also can pursue an endorsement in TESL. Many of the courses needed for the endorsement will be available at the MarketPlace, but not all. For more information about this option, contact the ESL Endorsement Advisor at SIUE at (618) 650-2060.
