For the working adult, going back to school can be a difficult and lengthy endeavor, but a new partnership between Mid-Continent University and Rend Lake College will make the process faster and much more accessible to adult learners in this area.
Through Mid-Continent’s Advantage Adult Accelerated Program, adult learners can earn a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Business Management with just 18 months of instruction. Classes will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursdays on the Rend Lake College campus. If enough interest is generated, another slate of classes may be offered in the Pinckneyville area.
Informational sessions will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, in Room 101 of the RLC Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus and from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in the Student Center on the Ina campus. Anyone interested in the program is invited to attend and learn more.
“We believe part of our mission is to bring as many four-year opportunities to this district as we can. We already have several, and this provides residents of our district with another opportunity,” said RLC President Mark Kern. “This is a win-win situation.
“We were impressed with this program in that it is all live instruction. We do not want just any four-year program, we want quality programs. The Advantage program is a quality program,” Kern added.
The Advantage program appeals to many adult learners because, with class held one night per week, interference with work and family is at a minimum. All necessary student services, such as textbook delivery, advising, financial aid and registration will be conducted locally.
Potential students should have approximately 60 hours of college credit with a grade-point average of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better and have two years of work experience. The Bachelor of Science degree requires a total of 128 credit hours. The minimum age for enrollment is 24, but there is an appeals process for individuals who have demonstrated independence and have work experience.
Traditional educational programs do not always work well for adult learners. The Advantage program removes many of the obstacles faced by these adults. Mid-Continent has similar programs set up in Southern Illinois, Kentucky and other areas, and there are now between 750 and 800 adult learners enrolled in the Advantage program.
Through the Advantage program, Rend Lake College will provide the classroom space and the instructor will be present to lead the class face-to-face. Each course in the curriculum includes a module which organizes and uses time-conserving techniques for both individual preparation and classroom participation. Classes are held one night per week in sequential order until the curriculum is completed.
Students in the program will take all of their classes together, forming a cohort group for cohesiveness and support.
Mid-Continent University, located in Mayfield, Ky., was founded in 1949 as a school for the ministry and has grown steadily over the years to offer numerous areas of study.
