The Community Education Program at Rend Lake College is offering three unique classes at a historic location in Benton.
At The Buzz this fall are instructional, hands-on classes that allow participants to walk away with products they have made. The Make and Take course, as well as the Stamp N’ Camp classes, will teach the enthusiast and the novice the skills of creating jewelry and cards.
Make and Take:Beaded, Pierced Earrings will teach participants how to make beaded earrings that will take their breath away. Supplies and tools will be furnished and the earrings will be made to wear out the door. The class will be held from 1-3 p.m., Sept. 23, at The Buzz. Also, beaded jewelry will be for sale at the class. A fee of about $9 will cover supplies and goes to instructor Mary Ann Kaak.
Mary Jane Graham of Mt. Vernon opened The Buzz about two-and-a-half years ago. It is a historic building on the square in Benton and was once a Woolworth’s Department Store.
The Buzz – located at 601 Public Square – combines a coffee shop, deli and espresso bar with a stocked book store and provides a relaxing environment through its eclectic decor, Graham said.
Marlene Webb, a well-known artist from Ewing with the Illinois Artisan Shop just south of the RLC campus, is the current featured artist at The Buzz.
Stampers will create two cards at each session of Stamp N’ Camp. The sessions will take place from 1 - 3 p.m.; Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2. Stampers should bring their own adhesive and $9 per session. The fee is only $5 per session for those who sign up for all three.
Participants in these RLC programs at The Buzz will attend classes in a side room within the business.
