Rend Lake College sophomore Matt Fox is one of the many students donating their work in support of the art program at the college. In Fox’s case, the offering is a fantastic fountain that he hand-crafted for nearly two months during a design course last semester at RLC.
Fox, 32, of Thompsonville, has donated his “Serenity Fountain” to the Annual Rend Lake College Art League’s Fall Art Auction, which will be held tomorrow night at Pheasant Hollow Winery, located a few miles south of the college. Tickets to the event are only $5 each and can be purchased at the door. A preview is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 19.
The art auction is an annual event aimed at raising scholarship funds for future and current students in RLC’s Art Program.
The donation by Fox is his way of helping, not only his own pursuit of education, but the program in which he is learning.
“Anything to help me and the program is beneficial,” he said. “It’s a good cause.”
A Marine Corps veteran, Fox’s tuition at RLC is being paid by a scholarship he earned through his service. His goal is to graduate RLC, majoring in Fine Arts and Graphic Design, and move on to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco to study Industrial Design. The institution’s creed is “Built by artists, for artists.” Fox said his aspirations of art creation began when he was young.
“I have always liked to draw,” he said. “Ever since I was a little kid, I have enjoyed art.”
The “Serenity Fountain” was made from chunks of slate tile; fish tank gravel; bronze, mirrored Plexiglas; and industrial polyurethane, he explained. Water flows from the center and it has an alternating light display.
“Most of everything I do is one of a kind,” Fox said.
The Art League is a group of RLC students – artists and otherwise – and a faculty sponsor. Students display their work in the annual fall auction and a show in the spring.
According to Art Professor Therese Melena, the fall art auction is the only auction she knows of that is completely self-supported by students and where all proceeds go directly into the program or facets of the program.
A few pieces of art at the auction will be designated to raise funds for the Art League’s trip to Chicago where they will attend the Sculptural Objects Fine Arts Show, or SOFA Show.
