Through numerous fund-raising efforts, such as selling holiday pins in the shapes of pumpkins and snowmen, Rend Lake College’s Practical Nursing students have exceeded the $40,000 mark for the RLC LPN Endowment. This achievement has led the group to the Silver Major Gift Award level for its donations and work with the Rend Lake College Foundation.
Organized by RLC’s Practical Nurse Student Organization in the 1987-1988 school year, this scholarship is an excellent example of selfless giving. The students who initially created the scholarship knew that they personally would not benefit from the award, but that it would help future students.
The students’ fund-raising efforts continue today, and the nursing faculty at Rend Lake College take turns annually working with the group. Money has been raised in the past by such endeavors as sweatshirt sales, gift basket sales, bake sales and raffles. Wal-Mart in recent years has begun matching funds raised by the group.
The scholarship covers tuition for summer courses. Traditional forms of financial aid do not always pay for summer tuition, so this assistance is very beneficial.
According to Pat Kern, Chief Executive Officer of the Rend Lake College Foundation, any Practical Nursing student enrolled in a summer term is eligible to apply for the award. The Foundation oversees the finances of the scholarship.
The scholarship typically provides assistance for two to five students per year, and 48 students have benefited from the scholarship to date.
The 45-hour Practical Nursing program is designed to prepare students for the practice of practical nursing as defined in the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The successful graduate will possess fundamental nursing knowledge and skills necessary to function as a member of the health care team as a Practical Nurse.
The three-semester program is approved by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. Each student will complete courses which will include classroom lecture, laboratory practice and/or clinical experiences.
Upon graduation from the program, the student will be eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses).
