Life at Southern Illinois University will be a bit easier for two Rend Lake College engineering students who recently were awarded scholarships.
Brandon McEwen (McLeansboro) has been granted a $3,000 Provost’s Scholarship ($1,500 per semester) through Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. McEwen plans to major in Electrical Engineering at SIUE after finishing his Associate of Engineering Science degree this summer.
The graduate of Hamilton County Senior High School said after graduation, he would like to work for an electric cooperative or a similar entity.
"I always liked electronics and computers, taking things apart and putting them back together," McEwen said.
A first-generation college student, McEwen received an RLC Presidential Scholarship when he transferred to Rend Lake College.
Janie Blanks (Bonnie) has been awarded a Diversity Academic Scholarship which will provide $500 per semester for two years at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Blanks will major in engineering, although she has not decided whether that will be civil or mechanical.
Blanks received the award based on her high grade-point average, engineering major and her status as a female.
Unlike the majority of college students, Blanks was home schooled. "Academically, I feel like it was an advantage, especially in math," Blanks said.
Blanks already has earned Associate of Science and Associate of Arts degrees and is finishing her final semester at Rend Lake College. She said she would like to obtain a master’s degree from SIUC.
